Spanish Volunteer Program in Montevideo, Uruguay

Uruguay is looking for volunteers and we would like to help this lovely country to develop this mission, are you the person we are looking for? The organizations we work with are nonprofit organizations. They work in the formalization of programs related to the reality of the children, teenagers, young adults and their families. The objective of their mission is to promote a cultural of life in accordance with the gospel and the values of justice, peace, solidarity, tolerance, love and respect for diversity.

Our school in Montevideo offers:

  • Spanish intensive course consisting of 4 daily group lessons from Monday until Friday
  • Help in obtaining adequate, affordable lodging
  • Introduction to the organization you will work for
  • On site coordinator

We desire:

  • previous knowledge of the Spanish language
  • openness to learning and motivated to serve
  • good people skills and sensitivity to situations of social need
  • Commitment and responsibility regarding tasks assumed
  • References which reflect upon intern's commitment and ability to carry our work as agreed upon

Procedure:

  • You select the placement you wish to be placed in, in filling out the enrolment form you will find below
  • Some placements will require an interview with the hosting organization after you arrive in the country to finalize the placement
  • A copy of your c.v.

Program:

  • Duration: minimum 8 weeks (if you already possess good language skills, you may choose a volunteer placement without taking Spanish classes).
  • During the first month you will attend Spanish lessons during the mornings and volunteer a few days a week during the afternoons.
  • During the second month you will volunteer full time.

Following are some of the concrete ways you can join in with your efforts.

Volunteer Opportunity I: Family and Early childhood Centers (CAIF in Spanish)

The CAIF centers work with fathers and mothers (many of them still adolescents) of children from birth to five years of age, giving them tools to help them become responsible parents. Your job is help educators and specialists as well as parents; work with the community area, and helping the nutrition area. This position works directly in one of two CAIF centers and has direct contact with children 0-5 years of age and their parents. Schedule: to be agreed upon.

We offer:

  • Individual and group guidance; team integration.
  • Internship certificate and letter of recommendation

We desire:

  • university students from the fields of Psychology, Social Work, Social Education, Teaching, recreation, arts and physical education.
  • References requested which reflect upon intern's commitment and ability to carry our work as agreed upon.

Volunteer Opportunity II: Child, young adults and Family service

This center organizes activities in an impoverished area of Montevideo. Your job is to help educators and specialists in organizing activities such as handicrafts, percussion, workshops, camps and sports in order to provide a better future for these adolescents and adults. You are in direct contact with children, teenagers and adults. Schedule: to be agreed upon.

We offer:

  • Internship certificate and letter of recommendation

We desire:

  • university students from the fields of Psychology, Social Work, Social Education, Teaching, recreation, arts and physical education

Volunteer Opportunity III: Teaching English

Many families cannot afford private lessons which leave children, young adults with little English knowledge upon entering higher education. Volunteers can make a difference by teaching English to those who otherwise could not afford it. Your job is to plan, implement and teach English as a Second Language classes to small groups of varying levels and ages in impoverished areas of Montevideo to help giving these people better study or career opportunities. You will be on your own, so prior teaching is essential. There are no teaching materials available. It would be great if you can provide additional academic support and helping children with their homework as well. Schedule: to be agreed upon.

Volunteer Opportunity IV: Maintenance of CAIF campus

The CAIF centers work with fathers and mothers (many of them still adolescents) of children from birth to five years of age, giving them tools to help them become responsible parents. Your job Maintenance and small repair skills in the areas of gardening, plumbing, electricity and painting for the CAIF campus. Schedule: to be agreed upon

We offer:

  • Transport expenses on public transport as well as meals.
  • Weekly guidance meeting.
  • Help in cultural adaptation and integration into rhythms of life in the area

We desire:

  • Adults with training and/or experience in at least one of the three following areas: gardening, plumbing, painting, or electrical.

Volunteer Opportunity V: Teaching Materials for the CLAVES program

CLAVES is our program of abuse prevention and non-violence related to sexual, physical, and verbal/emotional abuse toward boys and girls and adolescents. Your job is materials packing, maintenance of stock, storage organization, support in organization and maintenance of filing system. Purchasing and materials promotion. Schedule: to be agreed upon.

We offer:

  • Locally and regionally recognized workshops dealing with violence and abuse prevention.
  • Transport expenses on public transport as well as meals.
  • Weekly guidance meeting.
  • Help in cultural adaptation and integration into rhythms of life in the area.

We desire:

  • Students (who have completed up to 9th grade), or adults
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows

Volunteer Opportunity VI: Administrative Support

Your job is general administrative tasks such as: filing, data entry in Excel, record-keeping, work with human resources team, oversight of fixed costs, etc. Schedule: to be agreed upon.

We offer:

  • Training in the administrative area, integration into the work team
  • Help in cultural adaptation and integration into rhythms of life of the area

We desire:

  • High level of computer skills, especially in Word and Excel
  • Basic knowledge of accounting (does not exclude)

Volunteer Opportunity VII: Institutional Communication Support

Your job is production of internal communication materials (bulletin boards, e-newsletter, web page) in alignment with the strategy of institutional communication. Production of external communication materials (posters, news releases, etc.) Photographic record. Schedule: to be agreed upon.

  • Help in cultural adaptation and integration into rhythms of life in the area

We desire:

  • Adult students with backgrounds in social communication, journalism, or similar.
  • Background in digital photography (strongly recommended).
  • Background in web design, graphic design tools, and non-linear video editing (strongly recommended)

Volunteer Opportunity VIII: Health care

Montevideo is home to many public hospitals and clinics offering their service to patients of all income levels. This placement allows volunteers to improve their medical Spanish, while at the same time working in a clinical setting. Your job: Placement tasks vary, depending on qualifications, and past experience. Participants will gather vital signs, such as blood pressure, height and weight, and temperature. You may also be asked to counseling patients, treating minor wounds, and providing basic information about health, nutrition, and sanitation. Polyclinics, Accidents and Emergency Departments, Orthopaedics Departments, Fire Departments and public hospitals are the options and places where many aspects of working will be explored. Schedule: to be agreed upon
