There are now four different levels for the exam - A1, inicial B1 (elementary), intermedio B2 (intermediate) and superior C2 (advanced) and there are three opportunities per year to take the exam in Spain - in May, August and November.
The DELE is an official qualification, graded on competence and mastery of the Spanish language, and is offered by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Social Politics and Sport.
- The level A1 Diploma in Spanish is a qualification which is equivalent to level A1, the first of the six levels of learning set out by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This qualification proves that the student is capable of dealing with basic necessities related to predictable everyday situations.
- At inicial level B1, candidates are expected to be able to understand and react to the most common everyday situations and to communicate desires and needs using basic language.
- At intermedio level B2, candidates must be able to cope with common situations in everyday life, under normal circumstances which do not require the use of specialised language.
- At superior level C2, candidates must be able to cope with situations that require advanced use of the language and must also demonstrate their knowledge of cultural aspects of Spain.
