CELTA course in South Africa

As the CELTA course is a very practical teacher training course, mornings are made up of teaching practice (TP), where you will develop your teaching skills by teaching non-English speaking adult students. These are French speaking people who are refugees form the Congo.

Our school offers them free English so that they may fit into our South African society and live normal lives. You will be expected to teach a minimum of 6 hours at 2 different levels over the course of the month. Your teacher trainers will guide you on how to do this. When you are not teaching, you will be observing your fellow trainees teaching and you will also spend 6 hours observing experienced teachers teaching.

After TP, there are reflection, feedback and lesson preparation sessions and the rest of the day is reserved for methodology and language awareness workshops. You will also participate in weekly private tutorials with your teacher trainer.

You will be expected to keep a detailed file of all course work and materials. In the evenings and at weekends, you will be expected to complete small homework tasks as well as lesson preparation, which can be quite time consuming. You will also have 4 written assignments to complete over the 4-week period. Please be aware that this is a very intense and demanding but stimulating course that will keep you very busy indeed!

The CELTA course syllabus covers:

  • Language awareness
  • The learner, the teacher and the teaching / learning context
  • Planning for effective teaching of adult learners of English
  • Classroom management and teaching skills for teaching English to adults
  • Resources and materials for teaching English to adults
  • Professional development for teachers of English to adults
Why CELTA?

The University of Cambridge has long been involved in the TEFL Industry and is acknowledged to be one of, if not the, finest authorities on the subject. The Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) course, previously the CTEFLA, has been re-developed several times since the 1970's and today is offered at over 280 centres in over 50 countries. It is the most widely recognised and respected initial TEFL qualification available and is taken by more than 10 000 trainees worldwide each year. It is also the only completely internationally recognised TEFL course offered in South Africa at present.

Who is CELTA for?

CELTA is for anyone who would like to teach English as a foreign or second language, overseas or here in South Africa. It's suitable for people who would like to work internationally (on a short or long-term basis), or settle abroad permanently; people who would like to teach English in the corporate world, the educational sector, or privately from home; as well as for people who would like to make themselves more employable or change their career path. As the methodology taught on this course is very different to traditional teaching methodology, people already in the education industry will also find this course of great interest and great value.

What are the requirements for CELTA?

We recommend you be at least 20 years old to do this course, however 18 and 19 year olds with very strong applications may be accepted at the discretion of the institute. There is no maximum age limit. You should have the equivalent of entry level into higher education, (such as a matric exemption, A levels or entrance level to college, university, technikon or other tertiary study). You do not need to have a degree or diploma in English (or any other subject) nor be a teacher or have any teaching experience to qualify.

The third entry requirement is that you pass the Pre-Course Interview. This is divided into three sections, a set of written tasks, which you complete at home and submit with your application form, a second set of written tasks, which you complete at the institute, and an oral interview. You should be able to demonstrate that you have a good level of spoken and written English and a good awareness of the English language and how it works. Remember that you do not have to be a teacher already, but you must demonstrate that you have the potential to become a good language teacher.
