Levels of English.





  1. Beginner - almost no knowledge of English

  2. Elementary - Has some basic communication skills, but requires assistance. Produces spoken and written language in familiar situations. Where topics are familiar, conveys general meaning in spoken language. Can provide basic written information about personal identity.

  3. Pre-intermediate - Has basic competence in spoken English in familiar situations and roles. Is able to function adequately in basic social situations. Can produce written English required for simple tasks. Beyond the range of familiar situations can experience breakdowns in communication but has some strategies for requesting clarification.

  4. Intermediate - Has a general knowledge of basic structures and can use these appropriately in most everyday situations. Has acquired some of the language appropriate to personal and professional interests. Although likely to make many mistakes, is able to communicate effectively in both spoken and written English and to use coping strategies in difficult situations.

  5. Upper Intermediate - Operates effectively in spoken and written language. Has comprehensive knowledge of basic language structures and can use them appropriately in most situations. Understands the meaning of most passages of spoken and written language. Can use and understand complex and idiomatic language in familiar situations. Has some inaccuracies but can often correct them and does not normally make mistakes which hinder communication.

  6. Advanced - Has operational command of all basic structures of the language. Recognises different registers and operates effectively in registers appropriate to personal and professional situations. Can infer meaning and detect nuance in both spoken and written language for a variety of text types. Occasional errors and misunderstandings still occur but these are usually limited to unfamiliar situations and are handled easily.
