English plus Internship Course
The Eastbourne English plus Internship Program is designed to give students the opportunity to practise and improve their English both inside the classroom and in the workplace. Through combining an English course at our school in Eastbourne and with time spent in a professional environment, students are able to meet native speakers and put their English skills to practical use, whilst increasing their awareness and understanding of both English and international working culture.
With increasing competition in job markets internationally, the ability to communicate effectively in English is more important than ever. The English plus Internship program gives you the opportunity to practise and develop your English language skills in a business or commercial environment. Internships are carefully selected, according to your qualifications and work experience, in professional fields such as Marketing, Hotel and Catering, Tourism, Graphic Design, Finance, Fashion and Administration. Internships in other industries may be available on request.

Students first take any one of our English language courses for a minimum of 4 weeks, followed by an English internship of 12 weeks. The minimum total program length is 16 weeks.
During the internship, students attend the company for a minimum of for 4 hours per day, and in addition must attend weekly feedback sessions at the College. Students submit a short written report at the end of every week, and an extended report at the end of the course.
There is no typical internship. However, there are certain patterns to the placement, which depend on the student's abilities and their level of English:
- All administrative placement students will fulfil typical daily duties such as computer data entry and other office duties. Students with more experience can expect to have more of their own responsibilities, and in some cases, their own project(s) to work on.
- Childcare placements generally entail helping pre-school program teachers; working with children aged 2.5 to 5 years.
- All of our English Internship placements are unpaid, and companies do not contribute to students' lunch or travel costs.
Conditions of Enrollment
All students will be required to observe the school's Conditions of Enrollment.
- All applicants must be aged 18-30, have an intermediate level of English or above, and posses at least 12 months relevant work experience.
- Your application form, Curriculum Vitae and letter of motivation must be submitted to the school at least 4 weeks prior to the commencement of your work placement.
- Applications are accepted subject to your suitability for the positions available; students in the childcare field must bring proof of vaccinations.
- We will only start looking for your work placement once we have received full payment and paperwork for your course.
- Subject to availability, the school will endeavour to provide placements within the Eastbourne bay area city limits. Placement(s) in alternative locations may be offered if necessary.
- We will endeavour to find you a work placement starting on the date you have requested. However, we reserve the right to offer you a placement starting up to 14 days after your requested start date.
- Most companies will want to interview you before offering you a placement. This will usually take place during your English course.
- Full details of your placement, including the name and address of the employer, will be provided to you as soon as possible after your course starting date.
- We shall find out from you what type of work placement you are seeking, taking into account your education, training, interests, past experience.
- Once we agree on a set of plans for your work placement you must stay with them, and we will do our best to arrange the type of placement you want.
- If a company offers a placement that does not come within our agreed plans, we will set you up another interview. However, when a company offers you a placement, which does come within our agreed plans, you must accept it.
- You will not be permitted to refuse or change a placement except when the school considers that you have a valid complaint.
- We will make every effort to ensure that employers do not cancel or terminate a placement except in the case of serious unsuitability of the student.
- You must behave during the English Internship placement exactly as though you were an employee. You should learn by being with others in the workplace, and you should not expect your company to give you a vocational training program. You must observe any reasonable requirement of employers, particularly concerning any instructions given, dress code, and rules of the workplace.
- If a company does not provide the experience they promised, we will try to resolve the problem, provided that you tell us immediately after starting your placement. If the fault lies with the company and we cannot find a solution, we shall find another placement for you.
- We are not responsible for any student who leaves their placement without consulting us.
- If you are 'fired' by your company we will not find another placement for you.
- An internship placement is an unsalaried post. A host company may offer to pay certain expenses such as travel, but they are under no obligation to do so.
- Many people in large towns travel for an hour or more to get to their workplace, and you must be prepared to do this, though most placements are close by.
- The UK is a multi-cultural society, and even though your colleagues will be English-speaking, they can be from any national and cultural background.
