English Language Program and Courses
Welcome to the English Language School, Durban’s first international English foreign language institute. It was established in 1997 and is approved by CILTS (University of Cambridge, UK). All our teachers have successfully completed the Cambridge CELTA teacher training course.

The School is small and the atmosphere here is friendly and laid-back. You will get lots of personal attention from our team of friendly and committed teachers. Our courses will help you to improve your General English skills quickly and we will make sure that you get lots of practice speaking English!
We teach communicative English. Our courses will help you to improve your speaking, understanding, vocabulary, listening, reading, writing and grammar.
English Language Course Information:
- You can start your course on any Monday, however suggested starting dates begin every 4 weeks.
- You can study for as many weeks as you want to, minimum 2 weeks.
- We offer a wide range of courses at all levels, from Beginner to Advanced.
- There is a maximum of 8 students per class.
- We use the most up-to-date materials and classroom resources available. These include games, communicative activities and audio-visual aids.
- Our class hours are 60 minutes long.
- You will complete a written English language placement test and an oral interview when you arrive, so that we can place you in a class at the correct level.
- You will receive a private tutorial every 4 weeks.
- You will be given homework daily.
- There are weekly 'Active English' sessions, where you can practise your English in a fun and communicative organised activity outside of the classroom, such as a cooking competition, a language based game or a Zulu beadwork workshop.

General English
- 4 hours of class lessons a day, Monday to Friday. 20 hours per week.
- Balanced practice in developing speaking, understanding, vocabulary, reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, fluency and confidence.
- Afternoons free.
General English Plus
- 4 hours of class lessons a day in group, Monday to Friday. 20 hours per week.
- Plus 1 hour of Private English lessons, Monday to Thursday (4 hour per week), focusing on:
- Conversational English
Conversational English will help you improve your fluency, pronunciation and confidence in English. During the class you will discuss interesting topics and ideas with your teacher. You may also read a short article, listen to a cassette recording or watch a short video and then talk about it with your teacher. Your teacher will correct any mistakes or pronunciation errors that you make.
- Business English
We offer a variety of modules including Business Writing, Business Correspondence, Presentation Skills and Meetings. You must already be at an Intermediate level of English to do this course.
- Academic English

Intensive English
- 4 hours of class lessons a day in group, Monday to Friday (20 hours per week).
- plus 2 hours of extra class lessons, Monday to Thursday (8 hours per week), focusing on communication skills, such as listening, speaking and conversation or Business English.
Academic English
- 4 hours of class lessons a day in group, Monday to Friday (20 hours per week).
- Plus 2 hours of extra class lessons, Monday to Thursday (8 hours per week), focusing on Academic English.
- Course duration: 12 to 36 weeks
English For Academic Purposes is a course aimed at preparing students for study at an English speaking university.
The course covers study skills important at university, for example essay writing, note-taking in lectures, oral presentations and referencing essays. It also teaches you about how the university system works, including lectures, tutorials and the library system.
Wild About English Travelling Classroom
You may choose any of our adventures for a 16-day Travelling Classroom Expedition. Below is an example of our 16 Day Touching Africa Meaningful adventure that will be combined with English Training.
Enjoy an overnight Mokoro Trip in the Okavango Delta, work at a community service project in Botswana, enjoy a game drive into Chobe National Park, enjoy boat cruises on the Chobe River as well as the Zambezi, visit local craft markets, visit Victoria Falls "The Smoke that Thunders", visit an orphanage & drop off supplies, enjoy a canoe safari on the Zambezi River, enjoy an overnight trip with quad bikes into the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans (largest salt pans in the world), participate in game drives & game walks in the Tuli Area, relax at the Lost City & the Valley of the Waves, visit the Apartheid Museum and many more.
- All lessons will take place during travelling time and when in base camp average lessons in the morning are 2-3 hours and 1 hour in the evening around the campfire.
- English Language training will be incorporated in all aspects of the tour. A minimum of 10 pax and maximum of 20 students.
- At least one CELTA qualified teacher on each tour with a maximum of two for a group of 15 or more students
- We travel in an overland truck designed and equipped for a classroom environment.
This adventure will be great for student, school and other groups wanting to learn English in an amazing environment.
Private English
We also offer Private English lessons where you can improve specific aspects of their English. You may decide how many hours you would like per day, but we suggest a maximum of 4 hours per day. Classes are held between 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM and are subject to teacher availability.
