Terms and Conditions of Enrollment.

Art-Block Programs

REGISTRATION RULES
  1. At the beginning of the semester, students are required to attend an orientation
  2. Students with learning disabilities will be subject to Italian educational standards, and therefore they will not be provided the same special treatment offered by their home school.
  3. Mid-term and final exams will be administered only on the scheduled days that appear on the class syllabus for each course. For no reason (i.e. religious issues, travel plans, family matters, etc.) will they be anticipated or postponed.
  4. Our Institute does not offer Pass/Fail grades or Incompletes, but only letter grades. All classes registered for and grades received will appear on the transcript not withstanding the student’s intent to transfer credits to the home school.
  5. Our Institute reserves the right to withhold the transcripts of students who violate contract agreements related to housing and/or academic issues (i.e. any balance or debt incurred) and/or whose behavior is considered detrimental towards the school and other students.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
  1. Students who stop attending one or more classes without having formally dropped them (by filling out the proper form and giving it to their advisor) will receive an “F” in those classes.
  2. Students who miss 20% of the course contact hours will have their final grade lowered by one full letter grade.
  3. Students who miss more than 20% of the course contact hours will not receive credits for the course(s) and their final grade(s) will be “F”(s).
  4. Students who miss one or more exams will receive an “F” for that part of the course.
  5. Students who need to leave the Program before the end of the term must fill out an Official Voluntary Withdrawal Request form and submit it to their advisor. In this case, they will neither be eligible for credits nor receive any refund. Students who leave the Program without filling out the appropriate form will receive “F”s in all courses.

Semester Study Abroad programs

REGISTRATION RULES
    Students enrolled in either the Intensive Italian Program or the Super-Intensive Italian Program must be aware that weekly visits and seminars are mandatory. Please consult our course schedule for exact days and times of visits and seminars.

    1. Once course selections have been made (including alternates), only 1 course can be changed upon arrival in Florence. This variation to the course schedule can be done only once and only during the first week of classes and before Final Registration.
    2. Once classes start, you must attend only those courses you have been registered for. For this reason, auditing is not allowed.
    3. In case any of the courses originally selected is not available (closed due to class size limit or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment), you will automatically be enrolled in the alternate(s) you have selected, and/or be moved to a different section in order to level course enrollment.
    4. Should you need to modify your course registration before departure, please be aware that your course change request will be accepted only if forwarded 1 month before the date set for students’ arrival.
    5. Once in Florence, you should see your advisor for the appropriate form in case you want to add/drop one course. Once this form has been filled out and signed, it must be returned to your advisor, who will then receive final approval from the Registrar.
    6. Once classes start, and in case you drop one or more classes, you will not be entitled to any refund.
    7. If you are a beginner in Italian language or if you have had Italian language for 1 semester or equivalent and enroll in either the 3 or 4-credit Italian class, you must pre-register for a section. If you are a non-beginner in Italian language who have had more than 1 semester or equivalent of Italian, you should not select a language section because you will take a placement test after arrival in Florence. Depending on your performance on the test, you will be assigned a language level and section. You are, however, required to indicate how many semesters of Italian you have taken on your registration form.
    8. Non-beginning Italian language students enrolled in Super-Intensive, Intensive or Six-Credit Italian language will take a placement test in Florence.
    9. After arrival in Florence, switching from one Italian language section to another will be considered a course change.
    10. Students enrolling in Intermediate/Advanced Studio Art courses will have to take placement tests in Florence.
    11. Students will be informed about the add/drop and final registration deadlines during Orientation. No exceptions will be made to those deadlines.

    Summer Study Abroad programs

    REGISTRATION RULES
      You may enroll in one of the following Programs without exceeding the total number of credits allowed by your home school and making sure there are no time conflicts among the courses that you select.

      • PROGRAM 1: Super-Intensive Italian language (6 credits)
      • PROGRAM 2: Workshop in the Countryside (6 credits)
      • PROGRAM 3: One 3-Credit Elective (3 credits)
      • PROGRAM 4: Combination of Two 3-Credit Electives (6 credits)
      • PROGRAM 5: Combination of Intensive Italian Language + Two 3-Credit Electives (9 credits)

      Non-credit courses (i.e. cooking and wine tasting) must be paid extra, unless selected as part of Programs 4 or 5.
      1. Upon arrival in Florence students will not be allowed to change Program.
      2. Once course selections have been made (including alternates), only one course can be changed upon arrival in Florence. This change can be made only once and only during the orientation session held on the Friday after students’ arrival.
      3. In case any of the courses originally selected is not available (closed due to class size limit or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment), the student will automatically be enrolled in the selected alternate(s), and/or be moved to a different section in order to level course enrollment.
      4. Final registration will be completed during orientation in Florence. After final registration/orientation day, students will no longer be allowed to add a class. During the first week of classes, however, students will be allowed to drop a class with a resulting “W” grade. Any course dropped after the first week of classes will result in a “W/F” grade.
      5. If a student wants to add/drop a course, he/she must fill out the appropriate form. Once this form has been filled out and signed, it must be returned to the advisor, who will then receive final approval from the Registrar. This procedure will have to take place once and only during orientation/final registration day.
      6. Non-beginning Italian language students will be assigned to the appropriate level only after taking a placement test during orientation/final registration day.
      7. Auditing is not allowed. Students can attend only those courses they are registered for.

      ATTENDANCE POLICY
      1. Attendance is mandatory for all courses registered for.
      2. Students who stop attending one or more classes without having formally dropped them (by filling out the proper form and giving it to their advisor) will receive an “F” in those classes.
      3. Students who miss between 10% and 20% of their class time during a summer session will have their final grade lowered by one (1) full letter grade.
      4. Students who miss 21% or more of their class time will not receive credits for those courses and their final grades will be “F”s.
      5. Students who miss one or more exams will receive an “F” for that part of the course.
      6. Should a medical emergency occur to prevent students from taking an exam, they must contact their advisor before the day of their exam and inform him/her of the reasons why they cannot attend class(es). If the excuse is considered acceptable they must then provide written medical proof and make arrangements for a make-up exam.
      7. No excuses of any sort will be accepted under any circumstances on the same day of a formal class presentation and/or exam.
      8. In case of absence due to illness a student must immediately inform his/her advisor and must then see a physician in order for a certificate to be released stating the reason of his/her absence, which cannot exceed 3 school days. The doctor’s note will be considered valid (and the 3-day absence excused) only if presented to the advisor immediately upon the student’s return to school. The advisor will then formally excuse the student’s absence and inform the professor(s) accordingly.
      9. Should a student miss more than 3 school days, he/she will be marked absent and his/her grade for the class(es) will be lowered according to the above listed rules.
      10. Should a student need to leave the Program for an emergency, he/she will neither receive credits for the classes he/she is enrolled in, nor will the student be entitled to any refund. It is the student’s responsibility to contact his/her advisor to fill out and sign the Official Voluntary Withdrawal Request form. In this case, a “W” for each course will appear on the student’s transcript. Students leaving the Program without filling the appropriate form will receive “F”s in all courses.

      Cancellations, refunds, last minute booking and late payments

      Postponement of Courses, Changes and Last Minute Bookings
      1. The office must receive written notification at least 30 days before your program begins in order to transfer your reservation to a later course date.
      2. For last minute bookings and last minute changes, as well as for the late payments (arrival within 30 days) a $euro;60.00 supplement will be charged.
      Cancellation before arrival
        You must inform the office in writing. Cancellation fees are charged as follows, and any balance is refunded less non-refundable items (application fee, last minute booking and late payment supplemens, bank fee and payment processing charges, international courier service fees):

        More than 30 days before the program begins: Cancellation fee of 250 Euro.
        No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than 30 days before the program starts.
      Cancellation after arrival
        In no case money will be refunded once the course and/or lodging has started. No refund can be given for partial attendance or the discontinuance or interruption of a course/program.
