Florence Academy of Italian Music, Art
and Italian Language:

Cultural and Recreational Activities

Aside from regular courses Florence Academy offers optional cultural and recreational activities covering the entire week to ensure not only the enjoyment and cultural fulfillment of the students, but also to encourage them to practice the language in all of its aspects. These activities are fundamental in contributing to the creation of a relaxed and familiar atmosphere that involves students, teachers and staff and facilitates the constant monitoring of the progress of each individual student.

Fieldtrips and Excursions

At least 2 Sundays each month Academy organizes visits and fieldtrips to places of artistic and cultural interest. An art history instructor accompanies the students along an itinerary of the most significant monuments and museums, illustrating the historic and artistic aspects. The destinations to be visited depend on the time of year and the on the presence of special events/art shows, etc.

Walking Tours of Florence

The first Tuesday of each course, an art history teacher leads the students on a tour to familiarize them with the city and to discover its most interesting aspects. During the month, other walking tours and visits are scheduled to exhibits and other characteristic events; every Saturday morning there is a visit to a museum, church, gallery, or other place of cultural interest.

Conferences

At least once a week, conferences on various subjects (art, cinema, music, literature or politics) are held by instructors or professionals in these fields.

Music

One afternoon each week students can attend seminars on popular Italian music: a teacher talks about the song-writers, explains the lyrics, and guides the students through listening to the songs of some of ItalyÕs most famous artists (Domenico Modugno, Mina, Gino Paoli) as well as some of the younger generation of pop/rock stars (Gianna Nannini, Laura Pausini, Eros Ramazzotti).

Three encounters per week are dedicated to lyrical music: a musicologist explains, introduces and guides students through the most significant moments of the opera in schedule. During the festivals and concert/opera seasons, the seminars will focus on the opera and the composers whose works are being presented in the theaters.

Cinema and Theater

Once a week, there is a seminar dedicated to Italian cinema: the students are invited to watch a film chosen from amongst the Italian classics (Fellini, Rossellini, De Sica, etc.) or from contemporary directors (Salvatores, Scola, Tornatore, etc.).

Group trips to cinema and theater in the city, will also be arranged from time to time.

Artisans Workshops, Markets

To know Florence is to visit some of the numerous workshops where artisans still create hand-crafted wares, often by using age-old techniques, which have made Florence famous for its manufactured goods. The Accademia will arrange visits to leather workshops, gold and silver workshops, restoration centers, antique shops, and other places which are characteristic for their art or profession.

Visits to Farm-Houses and Wine Estates

Just as famous as the city of Florence is the Tuscan country-side, with its wine and olive oil regions. Visits will be arranged to farms that produce these and other typical, local products, allowing students to observe first-hand how wine and olive oil are produced, in the beauty of the rolling hills lined with cypress; where man and nature work in harmony, incorporating both innovative and ancient techniques. Of course during the visit there will be a tasting of the local products.

Lunches, Dinners, Parties

Florence Academy encourages its students to socialize with each other and with the world outside the school, and therefore organizes weekly occasions for getting together in the local restaurants and clubs.
