English and French Language Levels in Montreal

On your first morning at school you will be given a placement test. This will be used to assess your knowledge of English or French grammar. You will be put into a class according to the results of your test.

English and French courses are offered full time (morning) or part-time (morning or afternoon). If you choose to take a part-time course, please read each level's morning and afternoon description. Morning and Afternoon courses focus on different fields of study.

Each level takes aproximately 8 to 12 weeks to complete if you take the full time course.

Level 1

Morning: This course will help you develop basic language skills you will need to socialize in an English and French-speaking environment.  We will focus on building up your confidence as you learn English or French and will give you the tools and skills you will need to be able to interact with other native speakers.

Afternoon: This course is for beginning level students who want to practice basic listening and speaking skills.  As a beginner student, you will get help in basic listening, speaking and pronunciation skills.  Your aim will be to talk with native speakers with confidence in daily topics. The course will help you focus on listening and speaking skills so that you are able to understand what other native speakers say and talk with them.

Level 2

Morning: This course will help you develop and use all the basic language skills you need to live in an English and French speaking country. We will continue focusing on building your confidence when speaking, and will help you gain skills in understanding oral English or French. You will have lots of opportunities to practice these skills in class, and will be directed to use them outside the class to test your proficiency with native English or French speakers.

Afternoon: This course is for high beginning/low-intermediate students who want to practice and solidify their listening, speaking and pronunciation skills. This course will focus on helping you develop better skills to communicate your feelings and ideas to others and to discuss common issues in our society. The purpose of the course is to encourage you to express yourself naturally in real-life contexts, and to help you understand some cultural aspects of North American society.

Level 3

Morning: This course will prepare you to enter the intermediate language proficiency level: this means that you will be able to use the basic language skills you learned in at the beginners level courses and extend that knowledge and usage to more complicated settings. You will learn how to learn and practice increasingly more complicated topics, and will be expected to use your communications skills inside and especially outside the class with native speakers.

Afternoon: This course is for Intermediate level students who want to practice and solidify their listening and speaking skills. As an Intermediate student, you are still developing the foundations of your knowledge of English and French. This course will give you more opportunities to talk and practice conversational English and French at your proficiency level. Your teacher will give you a lot of exercises that focus on a theme, so that you can develop more effective speaking and listening skills. You will work in groups, discuss different real-life topics and express and share your opinion and your culture's perspective about the topics. The purpose of the course is to broaden your knowledge and use of speaking and listening abilities in real-life contexts, and to help you understand some cultural aspects of North American society.

Level 4

Morning: This course will help you expand and extend your knowledge of English and French to more complex situations. You will be learning more complex English and French constructions. Instructors will direct you to rely less on body language and to incorporate all the knowledge you have learned in previous courses when speaking, listening, reading and writing in English and French and/or with English/French speakers. There is a focus on fluency and accuracy at this level as well.

Afternoon: This course is designed to help you connect with the real English and French speaking world and to involve you in real language situations. You will be given lots of opportunities to practice your listening comprehension and speaking skills. You will integrate your language skills to increase your ability to communicate effectively to native speakers of English and French. The purpose of the course is to broaden your knowledge and use of speaking and listening abilities in real-life contexts in the context of North America especially, and to help you speak English or French in a culturally and linguistic acceptable way.

Level 5

Morning: This course will focus on developing your fluency and accuracy abilities. Since you should have a good foundation in general English or French skills by the time you enter this course, this course will extend your communicative competence further, refining your usage of the language. You will have many opportunities to carry out communicative tasks that require an exchange of information and negotiation of meaning. In addition, you will extend your oral and grammatical skills, and will have a lot of opportunities to practice them in authentic communicative contexts.

Afternoon: This course is designed to help you reach a level of competence that will allow you to interact with a variety of more challenging, sophisticated current topics. You will have lots of opportunities to study a topic and react and respond to it and to your classmates. You will discuss the topics that native English or French adults like to discuss with each other, and will be given the skills and knowledge needed to effectively participate in such discussions in the real world.
