General English Programs and Courses in Toronto

Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced English speaker, this superb overall course will give you the skills and confidence necessary to get to the next level of proficiency. Our skill-based curriculum is created to enhance all language skills and target individual weaknesses.

General English courses will:

  • Increase your speaking, listening and conversation abilities
  • Improve your knowledge of practical grammar structures
  • Expand your vocabulary and improve pronunciation skills
  • Build your confidence to use English in a variety of settings

Our General English Programs are offered with four different schedules with 20, 25, 30 and 35 lessons a week. At each level of study there are elective courses offered to allow you to improve your English in every area effectively and quickly.

Elective Courses

English Programs with 25, 30 and 35 lessons a week includes one or two electives. You can choose from the following options:

Elective 1.

  • English for Beginners.
    This course specifically designed to help beginner students overcome individual language challenges. The course is taught in very small groups so that students receive individualized attention as they are expedited through their areas of need. This course is only offered to lower levels and in small groups.

  • Accent Reduction
    Depending on your native tongue, you will have difficulties with a certain aspect of grasping the English accent. This course is offered to speakers of specific languages. The instructor will focus on the specific pronunciation needs of those language speakers. For example: "Accent Reduction for Chinese" is designed specifically to deal with pronunciation issues relating to Chinese speakers. Course offered on demand to classes of 5 students or more.

  • Journalism
    This elective will improve all of your English skills through an integrated approach to learning. You will work on specific projects each week and learn more about your school, your city and the world. Practice your reporting, writing, interviewing and collaborating skills to create a school newspaper that is popular among the students.

  • Media & Film
    You will improve your knowledge of slang and idiomatic language through the study of Media and Film. This elective provides you with a teacher-guided opportunity to examine language in Media and Film, and to further build your vocabulary bank of everyday language. You will have the opportunity to work with both contemporary and classical resources, enabling you to not only develop language ability but also to identify how the English language has evolved.

  • Writing & Drama
    Many students struggle with the challenge of overcoming their shyness in English Language learning. The Writing & Drama elective class enables students to increase their fluency and accuracy, in the safe environment of both a scripted and improvised Writing & Drama. This project-based class provides students with an engaging opportunity to directly influence what and how they will develop their language skills.

Elective 2.

  • English for Sports.
    If you are a sports fanatic who enjoys discussing everything from archery to zumba and anything in between, then this elective is for you! Emphasis is placed on building students' language abilities within the context of sports. You will have the opportunity to look at topics that include, but are not limited to: the history of sports, the Olympics, hobbies, team and individual sports.

  • Conversation/Pronunciation
    You will improve your verbal skills and gain confidence by learning vocabulary and phrases needed to discuss current events and everyday activities. By taking this elective, you will improve your fluency and pronunciation so that you can clearly express yourself outside of the classroom.

  • Slang & Idioms
    Native English speakers, movies, television and even business people use unusual English words and phrases all the time. To really understand the language, people and the culture of a particular country, it is extremely important to learn these idioms and phrases that you will not find in most English textbooks or classes.

  • English Literature
    This intellectually stimulating elective, allows students the opportunity to interpret language within the context of English Literature. Through the exploration of English language Literature, students are able to experiment with how to incorporate this language into everyday use. This course is especially useful for students who are currently education professionals or pursuing a post-secondary education qualification..

  • Academic Writing
    With an increase in international students seeking to gain admission to Canadian post-secondary institutions, there is a greater need for students to be able to demonstrate a level of proficiency in their academic writings. The Academic Writing elective offers students the opportunity to fine-tune their writing skills, so that they can effectively produce works that are appropriate in an academic setting, and on par with those produced by native English writers.
