Science: Ecology and the Environment.

French Language Courses in Ottawa This hands-on program introduces a study of physical geography, natural ecosytems and their protection, the transformation of rural landscape with its consequences, and the challenges of urban management. Visits to Lafleche Caves, Gatineau National Park, Mer Bleue Peatbogs, Experimental Farm, Waste Management Plant, and more.

The program consists of in-class instruction, outings, interpretive walks, presentations, guest speakers, as well as two major excursions per week.

Week 1 - The Changing Landscape:
The first week will be an introduction to ecology and landscape. Starting with basic physical geography, we will talk about rocks, mineral deposits, soil, air and water, taking the area of Ottawa as example of a complex landscape. This region is particularly interesting because it is a junction where different rock formations meet. We will study the transformation of the earth since the beginning, the evolution of life in the region and the change of the landscape mainly since the last glaciation. The changing climate will be a part of the teaching.

Week 2 - Fragile Eco-systems
What is Ecology and what is an Eco-system? Ecology studies the relation between living and non-living systems. It also studies the relationship between each species and each individual in an specific environment: the ecosystem. During this week, we will look at various ecosystems, from the fragile peatbogs, endangered lakes and forests of the region: leaf forest, mixed forest and boreal forest region. We will learn about forest growth and its dynamics including why natural systems are important to us and why we have to protect them.

Week 3 - Man in Nature
Agriculture is one of the major land uses in developed countries. The farms are getting larger, and more industrialised as new technologies are used. This has changed the appearance of the countryside, and also the habitat itself. Pesticides and chemical products have caused problems all along the food chain, reducing numbers of many species. We will take a look at current methods of raising animals and crops as well as study how modern agriculture has transformed the natural environment to feed the planet. We will see whether there is a price to pay for this transformation.

Week 4 - Man in the City
These days we are in conflict with ourselves. We want green spaces and nature to be around us, but we also want an easier life. In cities this conflict is most obvious. How do we reconcile the need for open areas, with the desire of more and more people to live and work in a city environment? Cities such as Ottawa are trying to cope with these issues effectively. We will look at urban management, how a city is structured and how transportation systems have changed cities causing urban spread and population migration.
