Learn German and Have Fun
in Vienna, Austria's Capital!

Wien - Vienna. The county of Vienna is the smallest county in Austria and is also the capital city of Austria. Vienna has a long tradition which reaches back to the k.u.k monarchie. You can still get the flair of this time by visiting some of the most famous buildings in Vienna.

The Habsburg emperors once ruled a huge empire from Vienna. The city is still dominated by the castles and places of the imperial seat: every year hundreds of thousands come to marvel at Schönbrunn, the magnificent imperial summer residence. Visit the Imperial Coach Collection, the Palm House and the Butterfly House. Admire Belvedere Palace, the magnificent state rooms in the Hofburg, and the imperial crown in the Treasury. Emperor Franz Joseph ordered the demolition of the city walls 130 years ago. In their place the Ringstraße was built - the showplace of the monarchy. Bordered by such important buildings as the State Opera, the Museums of Fine Arts and Natural History, Parliament, City Hall and Vienna University. Imperial delights for eyes and ears have been offered for centuries by the Spanish Riding School`s Lipizzaners. And the Vienna Boys`Choir.

The world capital of music. It provided a golden monument for its "Waltz King" Johann Strauss the genius of three-four time. An inspired musician in a long line of great composers: Haydn and Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, Mahler and Schönberg all worked here. A city with splendid concert halls, such as the Golden Hall in the Musikverein, from which the Philharmonic`s New Year`s Day concert is broadcast annually. Stars from all over the world love to appear here: in the State Opera; the Volksoper; the Konzerthaus. And at festivals like the Vienna Festival, the Klangbogen concerts during the Musical Summer, the Jazz Festval and the Haydn, Mozart and Schubert festivals.

The legendary Viennese café is known all over the world. This highly acclaimed and popular institution is enjoyed by people from all countries. Many poets have written about it and numerous songs deal with the famous Viennese café; it`s still vivid tradition and it`s inviting atmosphere.

Some examples of our social program and activities:

Lectures about Vienna
With the support of Video-Film Vienna, we offer each month information about the citys history, the interesting points for sight-seeing, and about what life is like in Vienna.

City Walks
Apart from the normal tourist sites, you will see a special side of Vienna. We will take you through the small, old streets of the inner city, show you some hidden treasures, and tell you stories and tales that you will not find in any travel book. Walk with us down the Ringstrasse, looking for traces of Mozart and Beethoven, or discover with us the rest of the ruins of the Roman settlement, Vindobona. Tours through the museums and other famous buildings. We organize tours for you through Viennas interesting museums - the Art History Museum, the Jewish Museum, the History Museum of the City of Vienna - and through the Vienna State Opera, and the Parliament.

Literature Seminar
Many students enjoy the literature seminar with Theo Pfarr each Wednesday in the middle of the month.

Students attending the intermediate or advanced courses as well as former students of our school discuss and analyze various works in German literature. In the choice of topics we take into consideration the reading list for the Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom, therefore the seminar also appeals to people who intend to take the KDS-exam.

Video Film Afternoons
In our Institut, we show you films on Austrian and German literature, works by Austrian and German directors, and also famous entertainment films like "Sissy" with Romy Schneider in the leading role.

Heuriger Evenings - typical Viennese wine taverns
A Heuriger is a typical Austrian wine tavern which serves its own home-made wine. Many of them are on the outskirts of the city. There, you can talk with friends and sit with a glass of wine in a relaxed atmosphere. You will be surrounded by what "Gemütlichkeit" means - Austrian geniality, or good nature. Come with us to a Heuriger, and take the time to get to know your colleagues better!

Viennese waltz - Evening
What is more typical for Vienna than a Viennese waltz? We invite you to spin around in time. Several times a year, we arrange a dance evening for you where even the less enthusiastic dance fans will see how much fun it is to move to the melodies of Johann Strauss. And, of course, those who really work up a sweat on the dance floor will have the chance to have something to drink.

Excursions near Vienna
Also, the surroundings of Vienna have a lot to offer. Join us for a trip to the Wachau, to the Melk monastery, to Neusiedler Lake, or to Klosterneuburg where Emperor Karl VI built an especially magnificent monastery.

Many of these programs are free, but some are offered at a nominal fee.
